Mine wastewater originates from mines where underground mining or open pit mining is carried out. Mineral water is collected and stored in dams above ground or in underground caverns. Therefore, there is a requirement of mining wastewater treatment to ensure a pollution-free environment.

Wastewater ponds, with their stagnant and nutrient-rich water, provide optimal conditions for the growth and proliferation of algae, causing filters to clog and bad odors. Algae can also clog filters, disrupting mining operations. As a result, chemical use and maintenance increases.
